        A bill to amend 1949 PA 300, entitled

   "Michigan vehicle code,"

   by amending section 662 (MCL 257.662).

               THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

           Sec. 662.  (1) A bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be

 2
      equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light

 3
      visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and

 4
      with a red reflector on the rear which shall be visible from all

 5
      distances from 100 feet to 600 feet to the rear when directly in

 6
      front of lawful lower beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle.  A

 7
      lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to

 8
      the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector.

            (2) A person shall not operate a bicycle unless it is

10
      equipped with a bell or other device capable of giving a signal

11
      audible for a distance of at least 100 feet, except that a

      bicycle shall not be equipped with nor shall a person use upon a

 2
      bicycle a siren or whistle.

           (2)  (3)  A bicycle shall be equipped with a brake which

 4
      will enable the operator to make the braked wheels skid on dry,

 5
      level, clean pavement.

 6
           (3)  (4)  A person shall not sell, offer for sale, or

 7
      deliver for sale in this state a bicycle or a pedal for use on a

 8
      bicycle, either of which was manufactured after January 1, 1976,

 9
      unless it is equipped with a type of reflex reflector located on

10
      the front and rear surfaces of the pedal.  The reflector elements

11
      may be either integral with the construction of the pedal or

12
      mechanically attached, but shall be sufficiently recessed from

13
      the edge of the pedal, or of the reflector housing, to prevent

14
      contact of the reflector element with a flat surface placed in

15
      contact with the edge of the pedal.  The pedal reflectors shall

16
      be visible from the front and rear of the bicycle during the

17
      nighttime from a distance of 200 feet when directly exposed to

18
      the lower beam head lamps of a motor vehicle.

           (4)  (5)  A person shall not sell, offer for sale, or

20
      deliver for sale in this state a bicycle manufactured after

21
      January 1, 1976, unless it is equipped with either tires which

22
      have reflective sidewalls or with wide-angle prismatic spoke

23
      reflectors.  If the bicycle is manufactured with reflective side-

24
      walls, the reflective portion of the sidewall shall form a con-

25
      tinuous circle on the sidewall, and may not be removed from the

26
      tire without removal of tire material.  If the bicycle is

27
      equipped with wide-angle prismatic spoke reflectors, the

      reflectors of the front wheel shall be essentially colorless or

 2
      amber, and the reflectors on the rear wheel shall be essentially

 3
      colorless or red.  Reflective sidewalls or spoke reflectors shall

 4
      cause the bicycle to be visible from all distances from 100 feet

 5
      to 600 feet when viewed under lawful low beam motor vehicle head

 6
      lamps under normal atmospheric conditions.

           (5)  (6)  A person who violates subsection (1)  , (2),
    or

 8
       (3)  (2) is responsible for a civil infraction.
