     February 22, 2000, Introduced by Rep. Brewer and referred to the Committee on Criminal Law and Corrections.


        A bill to require the department of state police to provide

   certain equipment to its enforcement members; and to require cer-

   tain employees of the department of state police to carry certain

   equipment while on duty.

               THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

           Sec. 1.  As used in this act:

           (a) "Electronic enabling system" means a combination of 2

 3
      electronic devices that are designed to enable a firearm to be

 4
      discharged only by a specified person or persons.

 5
           (b) "Enforcement member" means an employee of the department

 6
      of state police who is required to carry a firearm while on

 7
      duty.

 8
           Sec. 2.  (1) The department of state police shall provide to

 9
      each enforcement member of the department a firearm that employs

      an electronic enabling system.

           (2) Each enforcement member shall carry on his or her

      person, while on duty, the firearm and any component device pro-

 3
      vided by the department that comprises the electronic enabling

 4
