A bill to prohibit certain public employers from requiring firefighters to reside within certain geographic areas as a con- dition of employment or promotion. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 1. As used in this act: 2 (a) "Firefighter" means a member of an organized fire 3 department who is responsible for fire suppression and other 4 fire-related services. 5 (b) "Public employer" means this state or a county, town- 6 ship, village, city, authority, or other political subdivision of 7 this state and includes any entity jointly created by 2 or more 8 public employers. 9 Sec. 2. A public employer shall not require, by collective 10 bargaining agreement or otherwise, that a firefighter reside 01140'99 DMS 2 1 within a specified geographic area as a condition of employment 2 or promotion by the public employer. 3 Sec. 3. This act applies only to employment contracts 4 entered into, renewed, or renegotiated after the effective date 5 of this act, in accordance with the prohibition against impair- 6 ment of contracts provided by section 10 of article I of the 7 state constitution of 1963. 01140'99 Final page.
