CONTENT

The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to increase the period a driver's or chauffeur's license must be suspended for persons convicted of stealing or attempting to steal motor vehicle fuel by pumping the fuel into a motor vehicle.

Currently, the Secretary of State is required to suspend a person's license for 90 days for a violation of the Michigan Penal Code's provisions prohibiting the theft of motor vehicle fuel by pumping fuel into a motor vehicle (MCL 750.367c). The bill would require the Secretary of State, for a violation of this provision, to suspend a person's license for the following period: six months, if the person had no prior conviction for this offense within seven years; or, one year, if the person had one or more convictions for this offense within seven years.
