A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6015 AS INTRODUCED 9-27-00
House Bill 5549, passed by the House earlier this session, would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to set penalties for drivers who drive unsafely near emergency vehicles. [For further information on House Bill 5549, see the House Legislative Analysis Section's analysis dated 5-11-00]. House Bill 6015 would amend the Code of Criminal Procedure to place the felonies that would be created by House Bill 5549 into the statutory sentencing guidelines.
Causing an injury to a police officer through failure to slow or to provide proper clearance for an emergency vehicle would be a Class G felony against a person with a two-year statutory maximum.
Causing the death of a police officer through failure to slow or to provide proper clearance for an emergency vehicle would be a Class C felony against a person with a 15-year statutory maximum.
Causing an injury to a police officer through failure to slow or to provide proper clearance for an emergency vehicle while drunk or impaired would be a Class A felony against a person with a statutory maximum of life in prison.
House Bill 6015 is tie barred to House Bill 5549.
