A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5751 AS INTRODUCED 5-9-00

House Bill 5751 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to require safety belts on newly purchased school buses. Currently the passengers on school buses are not included under the law that requires the use of safety belts.

The bill specifies that with respect to each new school bus purchased on and after July 1, 2001, the driver and each passenger wear a properly adjusted and fastened shoulder harness safety belt. The bill also specifies that a child less than four years of age be protected as required in section 710d of the code. [Section 710d concerns child restraint systems and sets standards for children under one year of age who are passengers, and also for children between one and four years of age when they are riding in the front and back seats of vehicles.]
