A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5694 AS INTRODUCED 4-27-00

The bill would amend the Correctional Officers' Training Act of 1982 to add a requirement to take and pass a psychological screening test in order to be employed as a state correctional officer. In order to be recertified or certified as a correctional officer, an individual would have to receive a satisfactory score on one or more psychological fitness screening tests similar to those used by the Department of State Police to screen applicants for positions as state troopers. The tests would have to be approved by the state civil service commission and the correctional officers' training council and would be in addition to the current certification and recertification requirements for such employment.
