A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5396 AS INTRODUCED 2-17-00


The bill would amend Public Act 59 of 1935, which creates and empowers the Department of State Police, to create an Internet Computer Crime Unit within the department. The Internet Computer Crime Unit would be responsible for investigating crimes that involved the use of the Internet or a computer. The unit would also be expected to assist and cooperate with other state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations of crimes that are facilitated by use of the Internet, and to act as a clearinghouse for information related to computer or Internet crimes.


The Internet Computer Crime Unit would have at least all of the following as personnel: Seven enlisted officers with the rank of detective sergeant, four nonenlisted employees trained as forensic information tech specialists, and one nonenlisted employee employed as a secretary.
