A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5214 AS INTRODUCED 12-10-99

Currently, the Michigan Campaign Finance Act allows Michigan taxpayers to designate $3.00 or more of their Michigan income taxes each year to be credited to the state campaign fund, which is used to fund qualifying candidates for the office of governor. The bill would eliminate this check off after the 2000 tax year and would repeal the entire section of the act that created the state campaign fund on January 1 following the year in which the balance in the fund were zero. If enacted, the bill would not take effect unless House Bill 4860 (which would require the development of a postcard-sized optional income tax return form) also were enacted.
