A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4999 AS INTRODUCED 10-14-99

The bill would amend the Department of Corrections act to require the department to notify certain local authorities whenever a parole hearing was to be held for a prisoner who was serving a sentence for an offense that would require his or her registration under the Sex Offenders Registration Act. More specifically, the bill would require written notification of the local police department (or county sheriff, if there were no local police department) for the city, township, or village where the crime took place at least 30 days before a parole hearing for such a prisoner was to take place. The notice would have to include the prisoner's name, date of conviction, the crimes for which he or she was sentenced and the date and location of the parole hearing. Upon receiving the written notice from the department, the local police or county sheriff would be required to pass the information on to a newspaper with general circulation within the city, township or village.
