A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4739 AS INTRODUCED 5-27-99

Part 465 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA) is entitled "Fishing Shanties." House Bill 4739 would rename Part 465 "Ice Fishing Shanties and Rescues," and would add a new section to the act to establish an ice fishing rescue fund, which would be used to reimburse local governmental entities for the costs they incurred when rescuing anglers off unsafe ice. Under the bill, money appropriated from the fund would be used by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) only to reimburse local units of government for the costs of rescuing individuals because of unsafe ice conditions. The provision would apply to ice fishing, including, but not limited to, the placement or removal of a fishing shanty or other structure used for ice fishing.
