A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILLS 4554 AND 4555 AS INTRODUCED 4-22-99
House Bill 4554 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code (MCL 257.907) to increase the fine that can be assessed when a person illegally parks in a parking space designated for handicapper use. Currently, a judge, district court referee, or district court magistrate must order a person to pay costs and a civil fine of not less than $50 or more than $100. Under the bill, a person would be ordered to pay costs and a civil fine of not less than $150 or more than $200.
House Bill 4555 would amend the act that authorizes state universities and colleges to enact parking, traffic and pedestrian ordinances (MCL 390.892a). The bill would require that the governing board establish a civil fine of not less than $150 or more than $200 for a violation of a provision that prohibits parking in a parking space reserved for use by people with disabilities. Currently the civil fine is not less than $50 or more than $100.
