A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4477 AS INTRODUCED 4-15-99
The bill (which is identical to House Bill 4201) would create a new law, the "state veterans cemetery act," to authorize the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to acquire land for a veterans cemetery, to require the veterans affairs directorate to administer a veterans cemetery created under the proposed law, and to require the legislature to appropriate sufficient money to do this.
More specifically, the bill would authorize the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to acquire and buy land suitable for a veterans cemetery and to accept money or gifts from any source in order to do this. The veterans affairs directorate would be required to apply for and to accept all grants available under the national cemetery system, and to administer -- and to comply with all federal laws and regulations in administering -- a veterans cemetery created under the proposed law. Finally, the bill would require the legislature to appropriate sufficient money to accomplish the purposes of the proposed law.
