A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4324 AS INTRODUCED 2-23-99

House Bill 4324 would create a new act to be called the College Students' Children's Day Care Act. The bill would require the legislature to appropriate funds to support on-site day care for the children of higher education students. Under the bill, an institution of higher education would receive $500 per child under 12 years old each semester (in addition to other money the institution receives from the state), when 30 or more hours of child care were provided for a child during each week of the the semester. (Care provided for children of faculty would not qualify the institution for state payments.) The bill would require the institution of higher education to annually report the number of children it served, in a manner prescribed by the Department of Education, in order to be eligible for payment the following year. Inaccurate reports would make the institution ineligible for payment.
