God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as a pathway to peace. Taking as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that He will make all things right, if I surrender to His will, that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

Senators Vaughn, DeGrow and Conroy asked and were granted unanimous consent to make statements and moved that the statements be printed in the Journal.
The motion prevailed.
Senator Vaughn's statement is as follows:
I thought it would be appropriate today to make some remarks about a giant who lived and worked among us everyday, on his untimely death particularly myself who represented the area, and was a dear friend of Father Cunningham. I do this for many reasons. I had the pleasure of knowing Father Cunningham, as many of you did, and you know the kind of man he was and what a life he lived. Today we celebrate his life and his goodness, and I think it would be derelict to all of us if we did not say something that was appropriate for the service he rendered and what he had done for all humankind. I think Isaiah states it better: "See, I will not forget you. I've carved you in the palm of my hand" where it will stay forever.
I think the challenge for all of us: How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation and work of Father Cunningham who lived and worked and died among us? I thought it was compulsory for me to get up and make a few remarks for his goodness and what he had brought to all humankind in our state. His life, his teachings, and what he had made possible for all of us, will stand in eternity because he went about doing good everyday. Ofttimes, we do not recognize an individual because we see them everyday. But he lead a dedicated life through Focus:Hope and therefore we shall remember this good man; this good man who went about doing good for all of us.
I think it's important that we talk about him and what his life has meant for all of us. I think that this is the challenge for all of us. How shall we escape if we neglect such a golden opportunity? A man who we saw and we just marvel at his good words and things of that sort. I thought it would good because I had the pleasure of working with him, a man who lived in my district. Much more important than that, for what he lived and died for, he was truly a casualty of involvement, went about doing good. I thought that this would be appropriate for this august body.
He warned us that he did not want anything named after him. We'll think about that, madam President, because once you live and do good, your work speaks forth. I think that if we did not pause for just a second and think, the very stone in this Capitol Building would cry out because he went about doing good.
Lastly, I think this is appropriate: "And they shall build the old wastes. they shall lift up the former desolations, and they shall repair wasted cities, the desolations of many generations." I think it's appropriate that this Senate, this august body, just pause for a second and say "thank you" to Father Cunningham.
Lastly, I had the pleasure, as many of you know, of traveling to that august Rome. I had a private audience with Pope Pious VI and Pope John Paul through the efforts of this man. The first time I got to go to that Eternal City to see the Pope of all of Rome and all of the world. As a non-Catholic, this was much more important to all of us. So I wanted to just say a few words on his untimely death. Death is always untimely. We always have to get used to it. But I think if we did not stand here and say these words to you, this would not be in keeping with his legacy and his goodness and what he did to make this place just a little bit better than when he came.
Senator DeGrow's statement is as follows:
I too want to thank Senator Vaughn for bringing that up. I was proud to have been able to call Father Cunningham a friend of mine. He is one of the few people I knew who was able to transcend racial, political and class lines and was able to talk to all people, and actually move mountains. No matter which party was in charge of Washington/Lansing, they always listened when Father Cunningham came calling, he worked with all of us. The city of Detroit has lost a great friend and so has the state of Michigan. Probably the greatest tribute we could pay him, is to continue his work and to help see that the things he started at Focus: Hope continue on. That would be what he would want us to leave as his legacy, that the program, the many jobs he's created and the things he has done down there, do not fall aside now that we continue with them.
Senator Conroy's statement is as follows:
I appreciate Senator Vaughn's bringing this to our attention. Clearly, Father Cunningham was a leader in this state and was able to get things done. It wasn't simply a sandwich at the door kind of an operation. I was down there four or five years ago, as he traipsed me around the various buildings that he had job training programs in. He had manufacturing operations going on there and was the subcontractor to the auto industry. It was a $75 million operation, five or six years ago. I don't know what his operation is right now, but it's filled with quality people. Lloyd Reuss who is the General Manager and former President of General Motors, runs that operation. There are hundreds and hundreds of people that get trained to become efficient workers for industry. So they do migrate from Focus: Hope out into the workplace, and into the industry of this state and the nation. Father Cunningham was good at words, but he was also good at deeds. He had a great passion to serve people to make sure the city of Detroit worked, and we owe him a debt of gratitude.
