SENATE BILL NO. 833 December 4, 1997, Introduced by Senators VAUGHN, CHERRY, V. SMITH, O'BRIEN, YOUNG, STALLINGS, BERRYMAN and KOIVISTO and referred to the Committee on Government Operations. A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1175 (MCL 380.1175), as amended by 1995 PA 289. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 1175. (1) January 1, New Year's day; the last Monday 2 of May, Memorial or Decoration day; July 4; the first Monday in 3 September, Labor day; the fourth Thursday of November, 4 Thanksgiving day, and December 25, Christmas day, shall be public 5 holidays in the public schools of this state. If 1 of these days 6 falls on Sunday, the Monday following shall be a public holiday 7 in the public schools. A school session shall not be held on the 8 public holidays described in this subsection in a public school 9 in this state. The salary of a school officer or a teacher shall 05158'97 a DMS 2 1 not be affected by reason of the dismissal of school on the days 2 described in this subsection. 3 (2) On the third Monday in January in conjunction with the 4 federal holiday, Martin Luther King, Jr. day; February 12, 5 Lincoln's birthday; the third Monday of February, Washington's 6 birthday; MAY 24, COLEMAN A. YOUNG DAY; September 17, the date of 7 the adoption of the federal constitution; the second Monday in 8 October, Columbus day; and November 11, Veteran's day, a school 9 officer or teacher shall have each school under the officer's or 10 teacher's control observe the day by a proper and appropriate 11 commemorative exercise. A commemorative exercise may include or 12 involve the assignment of schoolwork to teach the significance of 13 the days described in this subsection, which shall not be consid- 14 ered as legal holidays for schools. 05158'97 a Final page.
