A bill to amend 1913 PA 271, entitled "An act to create the Michigan historical commission; to provide for the appointment of members of the commission; to fix their terms of office, prescribe their powers and duties; to prescribe the powers and duties of certain state agencies and officers; to make an appropriation to carry out the provisions of this act; to provide for the distribution of certain revenue; to provide for the listing and destruction of useless documents, books and papers; and to repeal all acts and parts of acts inconsistent herewith," by amending section 4 (MCL 399.4), as amended by 1992 PA 190, and by adding section 4b. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 4. The commission shall collect, arrange, and preserve 2 material, including records, archives, paintings, and statuary 3 illustrative of and relating to the history of Michigan and the 4 old northwest territory; procure and preserve narratives of the 5 early pioneers; collect material concerning the Indian tribes in 6 Michigan; collect, prepare, and display in the Michigan 03860'97 JLB 2 1 historical museum objects indicative of the life, customs, dress, 2 and resources of the early residents of Michigan; DESIGNATE URBAN 3 CENTENNIAL HOMESTEADS; and publish source materials and histori- 4 cal studies relative to and illustrative of the history of the 5 state, including historical materials and studies furnished for 6 that purpose by educational institutions and by the historical 7 society of Michigan. The commission shall cooperate with and 8 assist the historical society of Michigan and local historical 9 societies in this state and help to organize new local historical 10 societies of similar nature and purpose. 11 SEC. 4B. (1) UPON APPLICATION TO THE COMMISSION, THE COM- 12 MISSION MAY DESIGNATE A PARCEL OF PROPERTY AS AN URBAN CENTENNIAL 13 HOMESTEAD IF IT MEETS BOTH OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: 14 (A) THE PARCEL OF PROPERTY CONTAINS A RESIDENCE THAT IS 15 OCCUPIED BY THE APPLICANT. 16 (B) THE OWNERSHIP HAS REMAINED IN THE SAME FAMILY, AS DETER- 17 MINED BY THE COMMISSION, FOR OVER 100 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. 18 (2) IF, IN THE JUDGMENT OF THE COMMISSION, THE PARCEL OF 19 PROPERTY MEETS THE CRITERIA IN SUBSECTION (1), THE COMMISSION MAY 20 LIST THE PARCEL OF PROPERTY IN A REGISTER KEPT FOR THAT PURPOSE 21 AND SHALL AUTHORIZE TO BE DISPLAYED AT THE SITE A SUITABLE 22 MARKER, APPROVED BY THE COMMISSION AS TO TEXT AND CONSTRUCTION, 23 INDICATING THAT THE SITE IS AN URBAN CENTENNIAL HOMESTEAD.
