(1) As used in this part: 24 (a) "Physical therapist" means an individual licensed under 25 this article to engage in the practice of physical therapy. 26 (B) "PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT" MEANS AN INDIVIDUAL 27 REGISTERED AS A PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT UNDER THIS ARTICLE. 02924'97 5 1 (C)(b)"Practice of physical therapy" means the 2 evaluation of, education of, consultation with, or treatment of 3 an individual by the employment of effective properties of physi- 4 cal measures and the use of therapeutic exercises and rehabilita- 5 tive procedures, with or without assistive devices, for the pur- 6 pose of preventing, correcting, or alleviating a physical or 7 mental disability.ItPRACTICE OF PHYSICAL THERAPY includes 8 treatment planning, performance of tests and measurements, inter- 9 pretation of referrals, initiation of referrals, instruction, 10 consultative services, and supervision of personnel. Physical 11 measures include massage, mobilization, heat, cold, air, light, 12 water, electricity, and sound. Practice of physical therapy does 13 not include the identification of underlying medical problems or 14 etiologies, establishment of medical diagnoses, or the prescrib- 15 ing of treatment. 16 (2) In addition to the definitions in this part, article 1 17 contains general definitions and principles of construction 18 applicable to all articles in this code and part 161 contains 19 definitions applicable to this part. 20 SEC. 17819. AN INDIVIDUAL SHALL NOT USE THE TITLES 21 "PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT" OR "P.T.A." OR SIMILAR WORDS THAT 22 INDICATE THAT HE OR SHE IS A REGISTERED PHYSICAL THERAPIST 23 ASSISTANT UNLESS THE INDIVIDUAL IS REGISTERED UNDER THIS ARTICLE. 24 Sec. 17820. (1)A personAN INDIVIDUAL shall not engage 25 in the practice of physical therapy unless licensed or otherwise 26 authorized by this article. ApersonLICENSEE shall engage in 27 the actual treatment of an individual only upon the prescription 02924'97 6 1 of an individual holding a license, other than a HEALTH 2 PROFESSION subfield license, issued under part 166, 170, 175, or 3 180, or the equivalent license issued by another state. 4 (2) A PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT SHALL ENGAGE IN THE PRAC- 5 TICE OF PHYSICAL THERAPY ONLY UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A PHYSICAL 6 THERAPIST. 7 SEC. 17823. (1) EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN SUBSECTION (2), THE 8 BOARD SHALL ISSUE A REGISTRATION AS A PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSIST- 9 ANT TO AN INDIVIDUAL WHO MEETS BOTH OF THE FOLLOWING 10 REQUIREMENTS: 11 (A) HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A COURSE OF STUDY IN A PHYSI- 12 CAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT PROGRAM APPROVED BY THE BOARD. 13 (B) FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF THE COURSE OF STUDY REQUIRED 14 UNDER SUBDIVISION (A), HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED AN EXAMINATION 15 DESIGNED TO EVALUATE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED TO SAFELY 16 AND COMPETENTLY PERFORM AS A PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT AND 17 APPROVED BY THE BOARD. 18 (2) UNTIL THE BOARD APPROVES AN EXAMINATION FOR USE UNDER 19 SUBSECTION (1)(B), THE BOARD SHALL ISSUE A REGISTRATION AS A 20 PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT WITHOUT EXAMINATION TO AN APPLICANT 21 WHO HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE REQUIREMENT OF SUBSECTION 22 (1)(A). 02924'97 Final page.
