WORKERS’ COMP.: BURIAL BENEFITS H.B. 4500: FLOOR ANALYSIS
House Bill 4500 (as reported without amendment) Sponsor: Representative Frank M. Fitzgerald House Committee: Human Resources and Labor
Senate Committee: Human Resources, Labor and Veterans Affairs
The bill would amend the Worker’s Disability Compensation Act to increase the maximum cost of burial expenses for which an employer is responsible when a work-related injury results in death.
The Act specifies that, if death results from an injury, the employer must pay, or cause to be paid, “the reasonable expense of the employee’s last sickness and burial”. The cost of burial, however, cannot exceed $1,500. The bill would increase the maximum burial expense to $6,000, or the actual cost, whichever was less.
