     A bill to amend 1939 PA 280, entitled

 

"The social welfare act,"

 

(MCL 400.1 to 400.119b) by adding section 57aa.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 57aa. (1) A recipient shall not use the cash assistance

 

benefit on the electronic benefit transfer card, or the Michigan

 

bridge card, to purchase soft drinks or soda.

 

     (2) The department shall apply to the United States Department

 

of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service for a waiver to prohibit

 

a recipient from using the food assistance benefit on the

 

electronic benefit transfer card, or the Michigan bridge card, to

 

purchase soft drinks or soda.

 

     (3) If a waiver requested under subsection (2) is granted, a

 

recipient shall not use the food assistance benefit on the

 

electronic benefit transfer card, or the Michigan bridge card, to


purchase soft drinks or soda.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.
