BACKGROUND

Public Safety Officer Mason Samborski had worked for the Oak Park Police Department for four years when he was shot and killed at the age of 28 on December 28, 2008. While Officer Samborski was conducting an investigation following a routine traffic stop north of Detroit, the suspect fled the scene, leading to a struggle and Officer Samborski's death. When Oak Park built a new public safety building several years ago, it was named in honor of Officer Samborski and another officer who had been killed in the line of duty. More recently, when the Oak Park Police Department adopted its first dog for the department's new K-9 patrol unit, the Belgian Malinois was named after Officer Samborski.
