A resolution recognizing the 200th Anniversary of Macomb County on January 15, 2018.
Whereas, Originally settled by French fur trappers during the 17th century, Macomb County was officially organized on January 15, 1818, making it the third county in the Michigan Territory. The county was named after General Alexander Macomb Jr., a Detroit-born, decorated veteran of the War of 1812; and
Whereas, In 1840, settlers had moved into Macomb County where they started to build farms, county villages, and townships. The population included a mixture of settlers from France, England, Germany, and Belgium; and
Whereas, Between 1920 and 1930, the population of Macomb County more than doubled, growing from around 38,000 to over 77,000 people. This increase was largely driven by the early urbanization of Detroit and the opening of Selfridge Field in 1917, now known as Selfridge Air National Guard Base; and
Whereas, Today, Macomb County is home to 865,000 citizens and has developed from a small settlement into a driving force in business, innovation, and the Michigan economy. It is currently the third-largest county in the state and is home to 27 cities, townships, and villages; and
Whereas, Macomb County’s boundaries include vibrant, urban areas with a wide range of industry, commerce, countless natural features, and abundant agricultural lands. From the densely-populated southern cities to the rural northern villages, Macomb County enjoys an abundance of resources which make it an attractive place to live, work, and play; and
Whereas, Macomb County is home to a vast assortment of more than 18,000 businesses which has fueled its economic growth through solid infrastructure and a skilled workforce. Macomb County also heralds industries in advanced manufacturing, automotive, defense, health care, retail, agriculture, food processing and more; and
Whereas, Macomb County is an invaluable part of the history of Michigan and their accomplishments have played a large role in the state’s significance over the past 200 years; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That we offer this resolution recognizing the 200th Anniversary of Macomb County on January 15, 2018.
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the office of Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel and the office of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners.

The resolution was adopted.

Senator Bieda asked and was granted unanimous consent to make a statement and moved that the statement be printed in the Journal.
The motion prevailed.
Senator Bieda’s statement is as follows:
As a life-long member and resident of Macomb County, I would like to take the time to recognize the 200th Anniversary of Macomb County. Today Senate Resolution No. 114 is on the Resolution Calendar. The county was officially recognized on January 15, 1818, when Macomb became the third county in the Michigan Territory. It is named after Detroit-born and highly-decorated veteran of the War of 1812, Alexander Macomb, Jr. Continuing to expand and develop, Macomb County is currently the home to about 865,000 citizens, a far cry from the few French fur trappers who settled along the Clinton River so many years ago. One of the largest booms came between 1920 and 1930, when the population jumped from 38,000 to 77,000, partially due to the opening of Selfridge Field—now Selfridge Air National Guard Base—in the early urbanization of Detroit.
From the vibrant urban centers, to the beautiful rural north, Macomb County is instilled with skilled, hardworking, and enterprising people who continue to fuel the economy with over 18,000 businesses across sectors and beyond. Filled with industry and commerce, with agriculture and natural resources, Macomb County’s 27 cities, townships, and villages have continued to grow, innovate, and lead for all of its 200 years. Macomb County is also home to many veterans, we get to boast Selfridge Air National Guard Base as well as the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Command—TACOM for short—in the Detroit arsenal. One of the original arsenals of democracy.
Macomb County is a true microcosm of the American Dream, where a person of any background can strive to be something more, to better themselves, their community, and their state through service, hard work, and love for their neighbors. It is an invaluable and integral part of Michigan’s success. Macomb County and its residents have and will continue to help define and drive our great state for many years to come.
Senator Knezek offered the following resolution:
Senate Resolution No. 115.
A resolution to support the city of Detroit’s efforts in the creation of the proposed Joe Louis Greenway.
Whereas, Michigan’s wealth of trails and greenways create healthy recreation and transportation opportunities by providing people of all ages with attractive, safe, accessible and low- or no-cost places to cycle, walk, hike, and jog; and
Whereas, In addition to providing a safe place for people to enjoy recreational activities, greenways and trails often function as viable transportation corridors. Trails can be a crucial element to a seamless urban or regional multi-modal transportation system; and
Whereas, A pedestrian and bike pathway will, as Joe Louis did, bring people together by connecting neighborhoods throughout the city to the Detroit RiverWalk; and
Whereas, The 26 mile loop of bike and pedestrian pathway will not only provide a place for people of all abilities to safely walk, bike, and run while connecting neighborhoods, parks, schools, historic sites, commercial corridors, public transit, and much more, but also provide safe passage to Detroit from neighboring Hamtramck, Highland Park, Ferndale, and Dearborn; and
Whereas, The Joe Louis Greenway will be part of a nearly 240 mile network of pathways that provide seamless access to transit, making the city more economically competitive and expanding opportunities for residents; and
Whereas, The city of Detroit will soon tear down the Joe Louis Arena, which was a space the city and hockey team used to excel in sports and honor Joe Louis.
Whereas, Joe Louis changed boxing and epitomized greatness; and
Whereas, It is only fitting the city create this greenway entitled “Joe Louis Greenway” to ensure that it continues to honor him forever; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That we support and celebrate the contributions Joe Louis made to the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan as well as recognize the importance greenways play in our communities; and be it further
Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body support the efforts of the city of Detroit to create the “Joe Louis Greenway.”

The motion prevailed, a majority of the members serving voting therefor.
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
