Rev. John Burden, Pastor of Harderwyk Ministries in Holland, offered the following invocation:

“God,

We have gathered here today during this advent season and we are reminded of those great themes of hope, peace, joy and love. Christmas reminds us that You do not sit back as a spectator of our world and our lives, but You have entered into the brokenness of our world and into our scattered and fractured lives and You bring restoration to our lives, our towns, our schools and our states. And Your light continues to come into our world.

And God, we are participants in that restoration.

God I lift up this group of representatives today because they have refused to sit back and wait for someone else to bring change, for someone else to represent their communities and their districts. They too have entered in to work for justice, restoration, and a state that flourishes.

God we ask You to continually remind us that this isn’t about politics, or policies, but about people. Our people. People who are from Livonia to Ludington. From Marquette to Marshall.

And we have gathered here to give them all a seat at the table.

These representatives are here to give a voice to those who have no microphone and to bring those who have been forgotten back to the center of the conversation.

So God I lift up these representatives today, may they lead with vision and boldness. May they re-discover the conviction that made them run for office in the first place. Give them strength to work for a better state, a flourishing state.

God we pray this in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

______

Rep. Greig moved that Rep. Phelps be excused from today’s session.

The motion prevailed.
