Senate Bill 354 (as introduced 5-3-11)
Sponsor: Senator Rick Jones
Committee: Judiciary
Date Completed: 5-9-11
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Sex Offenders Registration Act (SORA) to revise an exception to the prohibition against a registrant living within a "student safety zone" (i.e., the area within 1,000 feet of school property).
Under SORA, except as otherwise provided, an individual required to be registered under the Act may not live within a student safety zone. One of the exceptions is for a person who was living within a student safety zone on January 1, 2006 (the effective date of the provision that added the prohibition). Under the bill, this exception would apply to a person who was living within that zone on that date, who had continued to live in that zone since that date, and who had not subsequently been convicted of an offense for which he or she was required to be registered under the Act.
